Asterisk is an advanced communications platform written as a software application.
It runs on a combination of standard, off-the-rack computer hardware and the Linux operating system.
It can act as a
PBX (telephone switch), as a VOICEMAIL SERVER, as an IVR platform, a call center ACD
system,and.....much much more.

Most amazing of all: Asterisk is FREE.

Using Asterisk to call

Solar-powered Asterisk PBX and
Communications System for Rural and Remote connections.

The first lines (picture from 1890) used a single wire for each telephone line.
This was known as the grounded system since the earth was used as the return path.
These lines were particularly noisy, picking up electrical noise from power lines,
adjacent telephone lines, telegraph lines streetcars, and machinery.
